Last year,
I started browsing for a good flashcard app or tool to supplement language
learning. Due to the time and energy limitations for Wendat language teachers
and learners, I thought that finding an easy and widely accessible tool for
learning vocabulary would be very useful. In my searches, I came across both
Anki and gFlash+. Since it operates on a variety of devices, is free and is open
source, Anki seems to be a great option. I created a sample deck in the desktop
version and tried to upload it to the website to make it accessible, but I had
quite a few problems along the way. The deck wouldn't synchronize between the
online and the desktop version, even when following all of the instructions on
the website. After a while, I gave up. Since then, I found gFlash+. Although I
haven't yet given it a real try, it also seems to be very useful. It is a free
mobile app that is available for Apple and Android devices as well as for Kindle
and Nook. You can create decks with text, audio, and images either directly on
the app or by importing a GoogleDocs spreadsheet. Once the flashcards are
created, you could also study them in the format of multiple-choice questions
or in quiz mode. If you want to upgrade the app to the pro version, you pay
$3.99 and you have several more options including the ability to import
flashcards from other sites such as Quizlet.com or StudyStack.com. Now, I just
have to motivate myself to really make use of these tools!
Hi Megan, great feedback for both flashcard apps. It's a shame that Anki wasn't syncing files correctly (but I like the desktop/ website aspects of it). On the other hand, I looked up gFlash+ and I loved the fact that you can draw your own picture for each flashcard as well. :) Sounds like an impressive tool, I'll definitely be experimenting with this one soon!
